Psychopharmakology
Psychopharmacology is a core field within psychiatry that focuses on how medications affect the central nervous system and human behavior. It combines insights from medicine, biology, and pharmacy to treat mental health disorders through targeted biochemical interventions.
Therapeutic Method & Overview
Psychopharmacological treatment in psychiatry is a structured clinical process that ranges from careful diagnosis and baseline assessments (such as laboratory tests and ECGs) and gradual dosing ("start low and go slow") to continuous monitoring of efficacy and side effects. Through close monitoring—including therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for certain medications—therapy is tailored to the individual, continued during a maintenance phase for relapse prevention, and finally safely concluded when necessary by gradual dose reduction (tapering).
